New patent from Magic Leap: Milestones to achieve important products

Today, Magic Leap applied for a new design patent from the U.S. Patent Office, “a virtual or augmented reality helmet with adjustable interpupillary distance.”

For adjustable interpupillary distance this function is an important part of the VR/AR head display. The VR/AR device sends an image to each eye, and the ability to correctly position these images will ensure clarity and comfort for users.

For example, the HTC Vive shows the rotation button at the bottom right. When you put on the head, you can turn this button to adjust the pupil distance. During the adjustment process, a number will be displayed in the head display showing your current settings. If you have measured the eye distance, just match the numbers.

In addition to the pupil system, the Magic Leap patent also describes a more stylish head shape than we have seen before.

As can be seen from the patent graph, this is what we see as the most ergonomically designed product appearance of Magic Leap. In their previous patents, the display prototype was very large, and the mask-like head was more similar to other competitors (Microsoft HoloLens and Meta2).

According to Magic Leap, early large system patents did not represent their final product design. So maybe this slim patent is also true, but Magic Leap's CEO Rony Abovitz said that we still quite expect it - " We have just achieved milestones in the development of some important products. "

Although there is little likelihood that the patent shows and actually matches, making the AR device so thin and smooth, it is a huge challenge for people to use it in the real world. But at least, the patent image shows that Magic Leap is actively thinking about this issue.
