Toyota analyzes the cause of deterioration of FCV battery membrane electrode assembly

At the Japan Automotive Technology Association's Fall 2014 conference (October 22-24), Toyota Motor Corporation introduced measures to improve the mechanical durability of fuel cell vehicles (FCV) "heart" - fuel cells. The company plans to launch the production FCV in Japan by April 2015.

Regarding the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in which the electrode catalyst layer and the electrolyte membrane are combined, Toyota believes that the cause of the mechanical change is the pressure applied to the MEA. After being stressed, the MEA will be deformed, cracked, and wrinkled. After studying the MEA's stress model, Toyota took measures to adjust the film thickness for the crack problem, and increased the contact pressure applied to the MEA for the wrinkle problem, thereby improving the durability of the MEA.

Toyota will release detailed performance parameters of the FCV on November 18, 2014. At present, the company has disclosed that the output of the fuel cell is above 100 kW, and the selling price (excluding tax) is about 7 million yen.
