Maxim launches miniature SPI / I²C UA with integrated oscillator

Maxim introduces mini SPI / I²C UART MAX3107 with integrated oscillator

Maxim introduces the industry's lowest power consumption, fastest, and smallest SPI / I²C serial UART for serial communication. The power consumption of the MAX3107 is extremely low, which can effectively extend the battery life of portable devices. The device's higher data rate (24Mbps) and larger space FIFO (128 words) can provide additional buffering, thereby reducing the burden on the system's microcontroller. The MAX3107 is available in a space-saving 24-pin (3.5mm x 3.5mm) TQFN package, which is 24% smaller than other serial UARTs currently on the market. The MAX3107 is also the industry's first UART with an integrated oscillator, which can reduce BOM costs by an average of 20%. The MAX3107 is ideal for industrial fieldbuses that require high-speed PROFIBUS DP communication protocol and low-power handheld consumer MID (mobile network equipment) applications.

High-speed demand for mobile devices

In short, for local link applications such as mobile phones, the UART can be used as a buffer between system application processors (such as microcontrollers) and modules such as Bluetooth®, satellite broadcasting, GPS, or 3G modems. Today's communication with Bluetooth and 3G modems generally uses higher data rates (up to 3Mbps for Bluetooth rates and up to 20Mbps for 3G modems). The UART that comes with the microcontroller usually cannot support the higher data rates mentioned above. To meet the communication rate requirements, designers usually use an external UART to support higher data rates. The additional UART can also reduce (ie buffer) the burden on the microprocessor.

MAX3107 can provide the high data rate required by current communication equipment to meet the requirements of the above high-speed communication. The device has the fastest data rate in its class (up to 24Mbps) and is ideal for 3G modems. In addition, the MAX3107 integrated oscillator eliminates the need for an external clock.

High-speed demand for industrial interfaces

The MAX3107 UART can provide an interface between SPI or I²C synchronous serial microprocessor buses and asynchronous serial data communication ports such as RS-485, RS-232, PROFIBUS, or IrDA®. The PROFIBUS DP standard requires a higher communication data rate (up to 12Mbps), and the internal UART of most microcontrollers currently cannot support this rate. The data rate of MAX3107 is up to 24Mbps, which is very suitable for the above communication protocol applications.

High data throughput requirements for industrial applications

The MAX3107 improves SPI / I²C data throughput. Both the UART receiver and transmitter have a large space FIFO of 128 words long (competitive devices are usually 64 words long), which greatly shortens the time that the main processor uses for high-speed, large-volume data transmission. As the data rate of the asynchronous Rx / Tx interface continues to increase and the SPI / I²C data rate limit of the host controller is gradually approaching, UART management and flow control occupy a considerable part of the host's workload. By increasing the FIFO capacity of the MAX3107, you can reduce the frequency of the host's response to interrupts, thereby achieving more efficient SPI / I²C DMA data transfer with the FIFO.

The MAX3107's PLL, clock divider, prescaler, and fractional baud rate generator provide great flexibility for high-resolution baud rate settings. The baud rate no longer depends on the reference clock frequency, and it can be set independently to meet system requirements. In addition, because the MAX3107 has automatic hardware, software flow control, and an optional FIFO interrupt trigger mechanism, the underlying work of the main controller can also be transferred to the UART. Automatic half-duplex transceiver control functions with programmable setup and hold times allow the MAX3107 to be used in high-speed applications such as PROFIBUS DP.

Low power consumption requirements of mobile devices

The MAX3107 has multiple operating modes to achieve lower power consumption. In sleep mode, all on-chip clocks related to the UART will be turned off, while in shutdown mode, the device will be completely turned off. These two modes can reduce the power supply current when the device is not in operation. In automatic sleep mode, the MAX3107 automatically enters sleep mode after its IO pin is not working for a period of time. When a valid signal is detected on any input pin, the device will automatically wake up. In these two standby modes, the UART stops sending and receiving data, and disables certain functions to reduce power consumption. These very power-saving modes reduce battery energy consumption and extend battery life, making the MAX3107 ultra-low-power UART an ideal choice for mobile devices.

The MAX3107 operates from a + 2.35V to + 3.6V power supply and operates in the industrial temperature range of -40 ° C to + 85 ° C. The device is available in a 24-pin (3.5mm x 3.5mm) TQFN package and an evaluation board can be provided to speed up the design process.
