Microchip launches lighting communication development platform designed for lighting applications with communication capabilities

Microchip Technology Inc. announced that it has launched a lighting communication development platform. This full-featured universal lighting development platform provides all the components needed to create a DMX512A or DALI lighting network, providing users with a complete "out of the box" experience. This helps lighting engineers use Microchip's rich 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit PIC® microcontrollers, as well as analog, wireless and human-machine interface solutions, to design intelligent lighting and control systems. The starter kit includes two motherboards, two communication interface adapters (DALI or DMX512A), a prototyping board, and required cables / power supplies. Novices designing lighting communications can quickly and easily set up interconnected lighting applications through a simple board-to-board network. The user interface, LED control and communication of the platform all utilize a low-cost 8-bit PIC microcontroller. Software development is based on Microchip's free DALI and DMX512A libraries written in C language and can be ported to any PIC microcontroller. In addition, the kit is equipped with Cree® XLamp® MC-E color LEDs to achieve high lumen output in a small form factor, as well as an LEDnLIGHT collimator LLC19N optical support produced by Gaggione to achieve high-quality color mixing and Spotlight control. The kit also includes industry-standard lighting communication connectors and isolation devices.

The new platform has the ability to create fully customized lighting solutions, can significantly reduce costs, and can achieve faster time to market through Microchip's free DMX512A and DALI software libraries.
